US and Malaysia: Lay off RP

advertisement

There is hardly any doubt among Filipinos that the United States and Malaysia, not to mention several Islamic countries, are pressuring the Arroyo government to give in to the demands of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front — not because these foreign governments truly want peace to reign in Mindanao, but because granting the MILF its "ancestral domain" will be the first step toward an Independent Islamic Republic in Mindanao, a development that will certainly serve foreign interests, especially the US and Malaysia, both of whom incidentally are very interested in a site called Liguasan Marsh, among other sites that can yield for them the fruits of the Philippines' natural resources, without interference from the Philippine Congress or the Supreme Court.

Why the US and Malaysia in particular?

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The answer may be found in the US pushing Anwar Ibrahim to take over the reins of government in Malaysia, for reasons of its own which have to do with Islamic radicalism in Malaysia.

Anwar is a good man, but with the US supporting him and his return to power, he will obviously also have to toe the American line somewhere, somehow, which may in the end dovetail with American interest in the establishment of the so-called Bangsamoro independent state in Mindanao controlled by the MILF under a US protectorate agreement.

Predictably, not one of these foreign governments will admit that they are pressuring government to go ahead and grant the MILF its demands, but it is evident to all that they have stakes in an MILF independent state — and not for peace in Mindanao either.
